Looking for work in Cologne without German
Cologne is a media, advertising and consumer city, with health and life-science employers in and around it, and that is roughly what reaches this page: online retail and pharmacy, marketing and finance roles at consumer businesses, and some laboratory and engineering work.
Who hires here
The city's business development agency, KölnBusiness, names research and science, health and life sciences, information and communication technology, the cultural and creative industries, logistics and wholesale, and insurance as its sectors.[1] English-language hiring here concentrates around a few large employers rather than spreading across the city, so the useful question is who is hiring, not how big the list is. The names posting most today are shown under this note, and each links to everything they have open. Where the jobs are covers the wider pattern, including the Dutch and Japanese corporate presence in this part of the country.
Cologne is a city of 1.1 million, and at the end of 2025 about 238,000 of its residents — 21.6% — were not German nationals.[2]
What it costs to live here
The city's statistics office puts the middle asking rent for flats advertised in 2025 at €14.70 per square metre a month, before heating and service charges, up 5% on the year before.[3] That is what a newcomer actually meets in a flat advert — for a 60 m² flat, about €880 a month before those costs. Finding a flat explains what a landlord expects to see.
The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month in 2026 and covers local buses, trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn in Cologne and across Germany.[4]
Your first weeks
Register your address within 14 days of moving in. On Mondays and Wednesdays you can go to a customer centre without an appointment; on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays you need to book one. Bring your passport and, if you rent, the Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung — your landlord's confirmation that you moved in, which they must give you within two weeks of the move.[5] After you arrive covers what follows, in order.
What this page is, and is not
Everything here is what those employers advertised this week — not a survey of Cologne. Work in the city advertised in German only never reaches this site.
